Jean Groen:

CLASS OF 1950
Santa ana, CA

Jean's Story

I was born on a farm in Kansas...and we came to California for my dad's health. After graduation I went to Northwestern University. I went to NU with the idea of becoming an engineer..but the counselor told me that engineers were a dime a dozen and to take something else, so I took Liberal Arts. The week after I graduated, I got married and moved to a farm in Iowa. I had four children and when the youngest graduated from high school, we moved to Colorado. We started wintering in Arizona in 1986 and I told my husband that if I was there for more than two weeks, I had to have a job. I can't sit around with nothing meaningful to do! So I walked into the RV park's manager and told him I had to have something to do. He said "my activity director just walked out...and the job is yours". It was a small park...Expand for more
of 400 spaces and I moved in and out of parks with the bankruptcies until the last park I worked as activity director had 2000+ spaces. I "retired" and wasn't home long until the manager of another park called me and asked me to come to work part time in the office. Part time soon turned into full time and I became the assistant manager. One evening after a program the hike leader came up to me and said "we ought to teach a class". I told him he could do the talking and I would do the cooking. So we started teaching about the plants of the Sonoran Desert. Since that time we have given many power point presentations, taught many classes, and co-authored 5 books. My business partner died 3 years ago, but I keep "keeping on". I have written 2 more books since then and am working on two additional ones.
